This study investigated the attitudes of students in Hong Kong secondary schools toward physical education and identified factors that may influence attitudes. Studies conducted elsewhere found that gender, school year, skill level and intention to participate were influential factors in student attitudes toward physical education. Group interviews with secondary school students were used as the basis for the construction of a survey instrument. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and Cronbach alpha coefficient were employed to establish validity and reliability of the attitude scales. A Physical Education Questionnaire was developed specifically to answer the research question and was administered to a stratified sample of 1172 secondary school students in Hong Kong. The data were analysed using multiple regression, analysis of variance and descriptive statistics and showed that (a) students had favourable attitudes toward physical education; (b) there were significant interactions between gender and school types, with male students in single-sex schools obtaining the highest scores while female students in single-sex schools obtaining the lowest scores; (c) there were significant main effects for gender, school year and perceived skill competence; (d) a relationship exists between attitudes toward physical education and factors identified as: perceived skill competence, gender and school year, and the greatest contribution to students' attitudes was perceived skill competence; (e) A relationship exists between attitudes toward physical education and intention to participate. The results of this study found that attitudes of Hong Kong adolescents toward physical education were similar to previous research in Western contexts. Results suggest that perceived skill competence, gender and school year have a significant effect on student attitudes towards physical education. The findings of the present study can contribute to future directions of the development of physical education that achieve the goals of education reform in Hong Kong.
