Özet:
Ernest Hemingway wrote The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms in the 1920s---a time of great movement for women. Although Hemingway has been considered to be the ultimate man's man, it is possible that he wrote his female characters, Brett Ashley and Catherine Barkley, to do something for womankind. At a glance, Brett and Catherine seem polar opposites---which has contributed to generations of criticism that has reduced and dichotomized them. However, their complex characteristics of agency, control, and intentionality, in combination with their ultimate outcome, represent a critique on his society. Both women, in their respective ways, attempted to rise out of the restrictions of their societally prescribed gender role, and both, in some way, failed. Although today it might seem strange to resurrect Hemingway and these female characters, the timing could not be more appropriate. The twenty-first century is existing in a social climate similar to that of Hemingway's time. And Lady Brett Ashley and Catherine Barkley, as societal operators in their paralleled societal climate, can and do function in our current moment of feminism today.
