Özet:
Power quality of a power supply deals with how reliable, efficient, and clean the power supply is. The concepts of smart grid and microgrid were developed to improve efficiency and reliability. Microgrid, as the name suggests, is a scaled down version of the main power grid that helps in integrating distributed generators (DGs) and energy storage devices into the distribution system. To help integrate these DGs into the microgrid network, power electronics devices are used like inverters, rectifiers, and choppers.
Power factor is another form of power quality that is defined as the ratio of real power to apparent power. Poor power factor is a common problem and will be the focus of this thesis. Different consumers of utility grid contribute to the variation in the power due to the nature of load that they possess or due to high integration of power electronic devices that inject reactive power into the system. For this purpose, utility companies adopt different methods of charging their customers for poor power factor.
For this thesis, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) has been considered as a microgrid, which obtains its power supply from Southern California Edison (SCE). The power factor correction (PFC) charges have been calculated and have been identified as an opportunity cost, which can save the university thousands of dollars. A detailed cost-benefit analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis was done to determine the return of investment (ROI), its practicality, and its advantages of implementing such a project. Different technologies were explored and power factor correction through shunt capacitor banks was identified as the most feasible option for CSULB to save money and promote the goal of sustainability that CSULB strongly believes.
