Burnout Syndrome is a prevalent problem among health care professionals, and nurse practitioner (NP) students could benefit from obtaining a better understanding of burnout and how to prevent it. The present project conducted a review of peer-reviewed research on burnout syndrome and used the information to develop an informative pamphlet presentation that was delivered to graduate NP students during a Research Day Conference. The high risk of burnout among health care practitioners indicates a possible need for improving student awareness of burnout, its consequences, and ways to prevent it. The project therefore was undertaken with the purpose of creating an effective education strategy to deliver burnout information to NP students, which is significant from the standpoint of improving student health and facilitating better patient care and organizational outcomes. The literature review focused on peer-reviewed journal articles published after 2013, with some exceptions for seminal research. Burnout was defined in the literature as a condition involving emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal achievement resulting from of job demands that exceed one's psychological and personal resources. The Maslach Burnout Inventory as a screening tool, information on risk factors for burnout, the consequences of burnout, along with evidence-based methods of preventing burnout comprised the literature findings used to develop the Research Day Conference presentation. Based on educational evidence, pamphlets were used educate students about burnout. The presentation revealed burnout was prevalent among the NP students, and students frequently did not know about their risk of burnout or ways to prevent it. This project resulted in recommendations to improve school resources for addressing burnout, and to conduct research on burnout among NP students due to a gap in the literature.
