Beyond navigating normative developmental tasks, African American adolescents must cope with additional race-related experiences that are distinct to their ethnic group. However, little is known about how African American adolescents, particularly those in racially homogenous communities, experience and cope with race-related stress. Using quantitative and qualitative measures, this study investigates how African American adolescents (N = 357) in urban, racially homogenous environments experience race-related stress and the coping methods are used to combat it. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that as experiences with racial microaggressions increased, using denial as a coping strategy also increased. For the 12th graders alone, no statistically significant main effects between racial microaggressions and the coping strategies were observed. However, for this subgroup, a significant 2-way interaction revealed that, for females and males, as experiences with racial microaggressions increases, employing religious coping strategies decreases. Null findings were most likely due to methodical issues that are thoroughly discussed in this manuscript and are accounted for through the collection of qualitative data. Qualitative data via individual interviews with 20 seniors revealed that these adolescents experience race-related stress in individual, institutional, and cultural contexts, which evoked intense feelings of anger. Confiding in family and friends was the most widely utilized coping strategy. Implications of these results and directions for future research are discussed.
