Aggression is a common behavioral concern for children as young as three years of age. Without intervention, aggressive behaviors increase in intensity and frequency resulting in social-psychological maladjustment for the aggressor and those victimized (Crick, Casas, & Mosher, 1997; Crick & Grotpeter, 1995). The classroom climate is one of several factors that have been linked to aggression among older children. However, no research on the effects of classroom climate on aggression and victimization in preschool has been completed to date. I hypothesize that healthier classroom climates early in the preschool year, and particularly those with strong behavior management and positive teacher and peer interactions, will be associated with less relational and overt aggression and less victimization later in the preschool year. This study utilizes archival data from low-income preschool settings included in the Building Bridges (BB) project (Baker et al., 2010). Participants include 2270 preschoolers and their teachers across 121 classrooms. Data were analyzed using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). Results indicate that healthier classroom climates in the fall were associated with lower levels of overt and relational aggression in the spring. Although not significant, a trend was also present for victimization, with healthier classroom climates in the fall resulting in marginally lower levels of victimization in the spring. These findings have implications for our understanding of classroom climate and the ways in which educators, practitioners, and policy makers approach relational and overt aggression and victimization in low-income preschool settings.
