The purpose of this study was to assess the diet quality of older adults in a western New York senior center using 24-hour recalls. Older adults ( n = 21) reported their dietary intake using printed modified multi-pass 24-hour recalls. The researcher entered collected data into the National Cancer Institute's online recall software (ASA-24). Data were then analyzed using SAS programming, which included the HEI component scores and total scores that were used to assess the diet quality based on the U.S. Dietary Guidelines. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines uses the Socio-Ecological Model as its conceptual framework. Mean and standard deviation, simple counts, and percentages were used to analyze total and sub-scores. The collected data were further examined using the total sample to determine any differences by gender. This study found that a total of 72% of the participants had diets that were classified as having "needs improvement" diet quality. To improve their diet quality, older adults need to increase their intake of dark greens and beans, fatty acids, whole grains and dairy and decrease their intake of sodium and refined grains. There was a very slight difference in diet quality between women and men. Through its application, this study may allow Registered Dietitian Nutritionists to provide appropriate nutrition education materials. This can help older adults better meet their dietary needs. If these changes are made, substantial health benefits may result.
