Özet:
The present study is a replication of McCullough and colleagues (1999) study which examined clinicians' preferences and practices in conducting videofluoroscopic (VFSS) swallowing examination in an adult, neurogenic population. The aims of the present study were to reexamine VFSS measures and methods: (a) to determine which VFSS methods clinicians prefer, (b) to determine which VFSS methods clinicians actually practice, (c) to determine whether or not the VFSS methods actually implemented are evidence based, and (d) to compare the results from McCullough and colleagues (1999) study to the present study. A survey was sent to 843 speech-language pathologists (SLPs) selected from: ASHA's Dysphagia Special Interest Group 13: Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders, the medical SLP listserve for the Connecticut Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA), and readers of SwallowStudy.com. In total, 32 returned surveys met inclusion requirements. Results indicated: 1) continued high variability among measures and methods preferred and utilized by clinicians and 2) an enduring need to validate multiple VFSS measures through research. In the future, understanding which measures are supported by research may guide the development of a standardized resource or standardized practice for VFSS swallow evaluation, which may lead to more consistent and accurate dysphagia diagnoses and treatment.
