Özet:
Regular breakfast consumption has been proven to be an important protective factor against poor nutritional status and obesity. In defiance of all the benefits that consumption of breakfast has, it is the meal most often skipped by adolescents. This research was designed to determine if a relationship exists between breakfast consumption, nutrient composition of commonly consumed breakfast foods and Body Mass Index (BMI) among college freshmen. Additionally, barriers and motivators to breakfast consumption were identified. Participants were sent a recruitment email through the campus-wide email distribution. The email included a direct link to an online domain, Survey Monkey, where the Breakfast Habits Questionnaire was available. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, were used to analyze demographic characteristics and barriers and motivators to breakfast consumption. A chi-square test of independence was performed to examine if a significant relationship existed between breakfast consumption, protein and carbohydrate content of commonly consumed breakfast foods and BMI. The results determined a significant difference between BMI's was seen in the obesity category, with a total of 5 breakfast skippers (18.52%) and only 1 breakfast consumer (4.55%) categorized as obese. The primary barriers to breakfast consumption were: I do not have time and I am not hungry and the primary motivators to breakfast consumption were: gives me energy and improves my mood. Further results showed that breakfast consumers consumed meals of primarily carbohydrate (n = 18, 82%). A chi-square test showed a significant relationship between macronutrient consumption and BMI's. Breakfast consumers primarily consumed high carbohydrate foods.
