Philosophy has a serious public relations problem. There are a number of persisting and widespread misconceptions that negatively impact general, layperson understandings of the discipline's values, objectives, and methodologies. Such misconceptions include: philosophy's esotericism, self-superiority, irrelevancy, and impracticality. Because philosophers are uniquely situated, and presumably motivated, to ensure the perseverance and development of their discipline, they have an obligation to correct these lay confusions whenever possible. Through the examination of various appeals such as utility, convenience, practicality, accessibility, novelty, and literature---which are grounded in generalized American layperson interests---philosophers can implement a number of recommendations in order to promote the discipline so that it is better understood and readily recognized for its value to both individuals and broader society. In considering these sorts of meta-philosophical and pedagogical issues, philosophers can employ various conceptions of 'public philosophy' to correct these misperceptions and cultivate greater overall appreciation for philosophical education.
