The experiences of adoptive parents with internationally adopted children, placed between ages 18 months to 6 years, were collected to gain insights on how this parental population learned the necessary coping skills to address the challenges associated with the potential effects of institutionalization and were able to avoid adoption failure after a period of at least 8 years post-adoption placement. Little, or no, education and preparation are provided by the adoption agency and facilitators or required by state or federal regulation. These parents then must then develop coping mechanisms to avoid the failure of their adoptions. In a generic qualitative study eight adoptive parents of children ages eighteen months to six years who were adopted from Haiti, Central America, Eastern Europe, and Asia shared their experiences of learning how to cope with stressors unique to previously institutionalized children in efforts to successfully avoid the adoption's failure. Participants were female, Caucasian, and college educated. Through a series of semi-structured interviews each responded to questions on how they prepared for their child's adoption, the unique challenges experienced due to their child's history, and what coping mechanisms were learned as a result. Transcripts of the data were analyzed using thematic analysis by constant comparison. The findings of this study indicate that the participants' were underprepared for the challenges of adopting older children. Their ability to cope with the significant stressors unique to previously institutionalized children may have been greatly aided had these parents been provided sufficient preparatory training to address the types of challenges and stressors likely with this population of children and basic stress reduction techniques.
