Little examination exists regarding if and how teachers are employing culturally responsive practices in the classroom and if so, how they are accomplishing this. While educators cannot control all of the factors that contribute to academic achievement, they can control instructional practices that occur in their own classrooms that create opportunities, climate, and teaching practices that are aligned with culturally responsive teaching. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the self-reported practices and beliefs of National Board Certified teachers and culturally responsive teaching practices. Participants included 12 National Board Certified elementary teachers in a district in southeastern United States. Data was collected using surveys and a telephone conference or questionnaire. Data was input into Nvivo for the purpose of coding and the identification of themes. Interview and questionnaire results indicated that the participants in the study were confident in their abilities to implement culturally responsive practices in their classroom, but survey results indicated that there were some areas in which the participants were not sure they could adequately implement in the classroom. Data collected from all sources indicated that the participants expected positive classroom and student outcomes from the use of culturally responsive teaching practices. However, data also indicated that many participants were uncertain as to how certain practices and instruction should be put into place. The findings from this study could be used to provide the educational community with insight concerning culturally responsive teaching practices of National Board Certified teachers and could add additional information to the current knowledge regarding teachers that obtain National Board Certification. Recommendations for future research include conducting classroom observations of NBC teachers and their use of culturally responsive teaching practices and including parents and students in the research to gauge their perceptions. An additional focus of future research would be to include a more diverse population of NBC teachers. Future research could also examine the philosophies NBC teachers hold as predictors of student success and how or if culturally responsive practices play a role.
