Aims: The aim of this study was to assessif bilingualismelicit different personalitiesin bilingualswhen using their different languages.Additionally, the study sought to establish the impact of shared environment and cultural norms on personality in bilinguals.Methods: The study consisted of an online survey containing a personality inventory in both English and German, as well as questions regarding the average personality perceived for each language. Participants were tasked with completing the inventory, as well as providing a rating for each facet of personality for an average speaker of each language.Fifty-six participants were recruited to complete this study through the use of an anonymous link.Procedure: The survey consisted of a personality inventory containing 100 questions, 50 in each language. Additionally, the survey included two questions consisting of six visual analogue scales to determine average personality ratings. Hypotheses:Firstly, it was expectedthatEnglish-German bilinguals would elicit different personalities in each language. Secondly, it was predicted that bilinguals who acquired their two languages in different cultural environments (coordinate bilingual)would show larger differences in personality than those who learned them in the same environment (compound bilingual).Thirdly, it was expectedthatpersonality results would be more closely related to the average personality ratings of their respective languages.Results: Paired samples correlations showed that participants elicited different personalities in English and German. Additionally, it was found that the reported difference was larger for coordinate than compound bilinguals. The results indicated that there was no connection between the personality elicited, and an individual's perception of the normative personality associated with the language being used.
