Özet:
The stability of non-democratic regimes in the face of democratizing pressures has been one of the growth areas of political science research over the last decade and a half. Despite the impressive array of studies on this topic, researchers have avoided explicitly theorizing about the role that nationalist rhetoric and symbols play in regime stability even though a wealth of anecdotal evidence indicates that many regimes regularly use nationalist appeals. In my dissertation, I develop a framework that explains how and when regimes use nationalist appeals and why these appeals improve regime stability.
I apply the framework in three empirical studies of how Vladimir Putin's regime has managed both the supply and demand for nationalist symbols to enhance its security. I first show that the regime's embrace of state nationalist symbols and ideas is associated with higher levels of individual support for the regime, indicating the utility of these kinds of appeals for enhancing regime popularity. In my second article, I find that the regime's management of state and ethnic nationalist ideas in formal politics has produced an electoral environment with an oversupply of parties emphasizing state nationalist ideas and sharply limited options for parties emphasizing ethnic nationalist ideas. The third article shows how regimes inject 'wedge' issues into political discourse in the hope of dividing ideologically-diverse opposition coalitions. Taken together, these analyses demonstrate that nationalist symbols improve the stability of regimes by increasing regime popularity and dividing opposition groups.
