Burnout is a common problem in the community mental health (CMH) field and can have significant negative effects on the success of CMH agencies. To prevent this negative phenomenon, CMH agencies typically focus on cultivating individual coping and resiliency skills for burnout prevention. In the field of psychology, particularly in the area of occupational stress and well-being, a growing alternative to burnout prevention is to emphasize organizational level strategies to foster a more productive work environment. An organizational approach for burnout prevention highlights the significant structural changes that managers, supervisors, and human resources staff (HR) can implement in the organization to reduce burnout for their employees. The current research used the Areas of Worklife (AW) framework, developed by Maslach and Leiter (1997), to explore the types of organizational interventions that are being implemented by CMH agencies. This exploratory, qualitative descriptive study draws on the insights of CMH supervisors, managers, and HR staff who oversee clinicians providing psychotherapy services in the CMH setting. The research findings indicate that the participants placed great emphasis on intrapersonal strategies for coping and significantly less attention on organizational interventions. Participants also revealed feeling restricted in their ability to change organizational stressors due to contractual requirements. When asked specifically about the areas of work life, participants most often reflected interventions consistent with the community and rewards domains of the AW framework. To expand on possible organizational interventions, this research presents multiple clinical implications and burnout prevention tactics to reduce CMH clinician burnout.
