The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' data show that males and some minorities are underrepresented in the registered dietitian (RD)/registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) category within the dietetics profession. This may be a result of their inability to successfully complete the pathway required to become RDs/RDNs. This study sought to identify the challenges and success factors for these underrepresented groups and compare them to the challenges and success factors of the overrepresented groups.
Participants included new dietetics professionals of any gender, race and ethnicity who had completed a dietetic internship within the last year prior to survey administration and had taken or were eligible to take the national registration exam in 2016. Respondents completed a 35-question, online survey to assess their perceptions regarding the factors that challenged them and the factors that helped them to be successful as they navigated the pathway to the RD/RDN credential.
There were very few significant findings related to differing perceptions of success factors and factors that challenged them between male and female respondents. Males were significantly more likely to require additional coursework to enter the dietetics major (p = 0.005). There were several significant differences between respondents from all racial minorities compared to Caucasians and Hispanics compared to non-Hispanics. Respondents indicated that obtaining a dietetic internship and preparing to pass the exam were the most challenging activities in the progression to RD/RDN. All minorities and Hispanics were more significantly more challenged in accessing college (p = 0.000 and p = 0.000, respectively) than Caucasians and non-Hispanics, respectively. Minority respondents were significantly more challenged in finding a suitable dietetics program (p = 0.001). Caucasian respondents were nearly 2.2 times more likely to pass the RD/RDN exam on the first try compared to all racial minorities (OR = 2.185, CI [1.336, 3.573]). The expense of pursuing the RD/RDN credential was a major challenge for most respondents regardless of race, ethnicity or gender. Having a support network was a major success factor.
The Academy needs to expand current diversity strategies and embrace new ones to minimize known challenges and increase support to increase the numbers of registered dietitian nutritionists from underrepresented groups in the future workforce.
