Özet:
Though, Gambia is one of the smallest members of ECOWAS in population, landmass and economic indices, the case of The Gambia is important given that it is the most recent example of efforts by sit tight ruler to hold on to power illegally having rejected the results of election defeat. Former President Yayha Jammeh declined all entreaties by ECOWAS and The Gambia was nearly invaded by a hastily scrammed ECOWAS military intervention force. Thus, it is the relatively recent nature of the crisis and the near failure of mediation efforts that makes The Gambia an interesting case for examining ECOWAS attempt at unseating sit tight leader and promote the ethics of adhering to elections verdict which qualifies as democracy promotion through sub-regional diplomacy.
This research work makes use of descriptive type of survey research. It involves identification and measurement of the characteristics of the population of interest, which is the impact of ECOWAS protocol of democracy and good governance in West Africa, the case of Gambia, using the quantitative and qualitative descriptive and historical methods in analyzing the data.
The study, however, discover that ECOWAS effort at removing the seat tight leader in the Gambia contributed to democratic promotion in West Africa, though, there are some challenges faced by ECOWAS in the pre-election, election and post-election Gambia but funding among the ECOWAS member state and Ecowas not sending election observation mission are not the major challenges but the lack of democratic culture and reversal of position by jammeh is the main an in the case of Gambia three strategic missions was adopted to remove the seat tight ruler (Jammeh) from power, namely, the early warning team, mediation and military. ECOWAS making use of the mediation strategy alongside the military was the best strategy so far.
The study, thereby recommended that, Reconciliation in a national dialogue, Constitutional reform, giving a listening ear to the people will reduce the tension among them, Restructuring Media actor, political institution and the civil society, Maintenance of the gap and Reducing restriction barrier.
