Özet:
Research shows career and technology centers have faced recruitment and retention issues for many years. Although the majority of the centers had declining enrollment a small number saw sustained or increased pupil counts. This descriptive case study was used to discover practices and procedures used by career centers with sustained or increased enrollment. By applying the constructivist theoretical framework, data was collected from the participants and reviewed. Interviews with designees using a compiled list of interview questions which were designed to yield results on recruitment and retention practices were used to collect data. A summative approach was used in the content analysis to maintain the focus of the study. The data collected was organized into three reoccurring themes: Retention Practices, Recruitment Practices, and Student Attributes. The Recruitment Practices identified the challenges faced in student recruitment. The Retention Practices provided a look at the various practices identified by participants used to motivate current students to complete their area of study. The third theme which emerged was the Student Attributes. This theme used data and research to develop a knowledge of the students, their backgrounds, and identify the unique qualities of each which contributed to the diverse learning available to all students. The study findings were used to build the conclusion that career centers can improve student enrollment by developing plans and procedures to address recruitment and retention.
