Mental health stigma is a major barrier towards help-seeking in individuals with a mental illness. There are two main types of mental health stigma. Public stigma refers to the public's negative attitudes and behaviors towards a person with a mental health disorder. Self-stigma refers to negative intrapersonal attitudes one holds towards themselves after they receive a mental health diagnosis. There have been a number of studies looking at ways to effectively reduce stigma. Studies have found that education and contact with an individual with a mental illness can be successful methods for reducing stigma. Persuasion techniques such as celebrity endorsements and successful figures have also been used historically to alter an audience's attitudes and perceptions. This study aimed to create an effective message for college students using these forms of reducing stigma and increasing knowledge about depression and treatment-seeking, while also adding a component to the message to gain and hold the audience's attention. The results indicate that adding an attention-grabbing component to the message significantly improved attitudes toward help-seeking with trends toward decreased self-stigma and increased knowledge. The results of this study support the importance of including an attention grabbing component to disrupt an audience's automatic processing in order to make an effective message for reducing self-stigma, increasing help-seeking, and increasing knowledge of depression. Social-stigma appears to be a more difficult construct to combat and may require additional persuasive components. Follow-up studies should include a larger and more diverse subject pool.
