Özet:
Although cultural intelligence (CQ) may effectively enable occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals to promote positive occupational behaviors, manage OSH elements, and operate in culturally diverse workplaces, little is known about the CQ characteristics of Certified Safety Professionals (CSPs). The purpose of this study was to discover the self-reported characteristics of CQ, CQ factors, and CQ sub-dimensions among CSPs in the United States and to determine if age, sex, job title, and race/ethnicity predicted CQ. The Expanded Cultural Intelligence Scale was used without adapting any items and delivered via electronic message to CSPs listed in eSafetySource. Data were collected through REDCap and analyzed using SPSS 25. The population was 1,136 CSPs. Of 277 surveys recorded, 191 were complete and 86 were incomplete, resulting in a response rate of 16.8%. Means were scored on a 1-7 Likert scale, where 1 = Strongly Disagree and 7 = Strongly Agree. The CQ mean was 5.00 (SD = 0.95). The means of CQ factors were: (a) motivational CQ at 5.57 (SD = 0.96), (b) cognitive CQ at 4.17 ( SD = 1.34), (c) meta-cognitive CQ at 5.30 (SD = 1.05), and (d) behavioral CQ at 4.98 (SD = 1.21). Age, sex, job title, and race/ethnicity were not correlated with overall CQ scores and did not predict overall CQ scores. Self-reported CQ scores indicated CQ in CSPs should be maintained and/or enhanced. Due to the purposive nature of the sample, results are not generalizable nor should they be used to make causal inferences. This incipient study developed the foundation on which to build CQ research in the safety profession.
