Özet:
Expatriation is an expensive staffing strategy, but it is a way to understand international operations. Matching a candidate during the selection process with the position requirements and individual qualification reduces the international assignment failure rate. The intent of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between the expatriate selection criteria and the completion of foreign assignments in Puerto Rico. In this study, the variables included selection criteria namely; technical competencies, personality traits, and family support, and the completion of foreign assignments for expatriates in Puerto Rico as the outcome. The theoretical model was based on a contingency paradigm that aligns expatriate assignment depending on the purpose; intercultural competence, developmental, knowledge flow, and the fit between the expatriate and the strategy. The findings revealed statistically significant correlations between technical competence and the personality traits of agreeableness, emotional stability, openness, and extraversion. A key finding from both chi square and the independent-samples t test was an association between family support and completion of the foreign assignment. There was a statistically significant difference in means between group family support and completion of the assignment: the family support of those who completed the assignment was higher than the family support of those who did not complete the assignment. This result supported the alternate hypothesis that there is a correlation between family support and the completion of the assignment. These findings may assist in closing the knowledge gap on the limited literature involving expatriates in Puerto Rico.
