Özet:
The purpose of this thesis is to study the issue of ethical relativism on the eve of the next millennium. This is carried out through a comprehensive conceptual, historical and critical study of the topic with particular reference to the most underlying issue of the foundations of morality. The first chapter of this thesis clarifies the conceptual context of the debate on ethical relativism within the more general discussion about relativism. The second chapter studies the history of ethical relativism, especially in the twentieth century and more especially in the 80s and 90s. This historical study shows that, unlike in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, support for ethical relativism has recently declined. In the third chapter, I study three different types of ethical relativism: the descriptive, the meta-ethical and the normative and distinguish between different possible grounds for each. Each ground is criticised separately and is argued to be false or inadequate. In the second part of this chapter, a comprehensive account of absolutists' policy in dealing with the issue of ethical relativism is given. It is argued that a non-relativist account of morality is capable of explaining our moral experiences without having undesirable implications of ethical relativism. In the fourth and fifth chapters of this thesis, I have studied two of the most important and recent theories of ethical relativism developed by Gilbert Harman and David Wong. Comparing these two theories, I have argued that they are both subject to fatal criticisms. Since it has been argued in the previous chapters that the most promising strategy to settle the debate on ethical relativism is to study it within a more underlying study of the foundations of morality, I begin to develop a new theory of morality in the sixth chapter. This theory is based on self-love with special reference to the nature of morality, moral ideals and the process of decision making.
