Özet:
Previous research suggests that discrimination consistently predicts increases in depressive and anxiety symptomatology and stress (Appel, 2004; Bennett et al., 2004; Swim, 2003). However, these relationships have been found to be influenced by other person-related variables. Experiential avoidance is the tendency to attempt to control or eliminate distressing internal experiences. Experiential avoidance contributes to the maintenance of anxiety and depressive disorders (Forsyth, Eifert, & Barrios, 2006; Hayes et al., 1996). We hypothesized that after controlling for thought suppression, experiential avoidance would moderate the relation between racial discrimination and mental health symptoms, specifically depressive, anxiety and stress symptoms such that individuals with high levels of experiential avoidance would be at increased risk for negative outcomes in the context of discrimination. Results indicated that experiential avoidance moderated the relationship between racial discrimination and depressive, anxiety, and stress symptomatology when they were taken together. However, when looking at them separately, experiential avoidance was only found to moderate the relationship between racial discrimination and anxiety symptoms. Hence, experiential avoidance may be an important risk factor for anxiety in African Americans.
