Özet:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the most common reasons C' Lyceum students fear writing composition in Cyprus. The reasons were the following: fear of evaluation; students' self-beliefs as writers; students' beliefs about writing: (a) writing is a hard process, (b) writing is an inborn ability; and insufficient writing skills. This study employed qualitative methods. A short survey was administered to a sample of 48 C' Lyceum students. Semi-structured interviews with 14 C' Lyceum students followed. The population was 17 to 18-year-old Cypriot students exposed to writing composition for twelve years whose mother language was Greek. Sample selection was done from an after school private English language institute in Limassol, Cyprus.
This study resulted in four basic findings: a) fear of evaluation leads to students' fear of writing composition, b) students' low level of confidence as writers makes them apprehensive toward writing, c) students' belief writing composition is a hard process based on school requirements yields their fear toward writing composition, whereas they considered writing composition as an ability cultivatable irrespective of whether writing is an inborn ability or not, d) insufficient writing skills result in students' fear of writing composition as they feel unable to write noteworthy compositions.
This study suggested: a) students should overcome their fear toward writing composition since composition plays a significant role for their entrance to different universities as it is a major part of the Modern Greek language lesson in the final Pan Cyprian Examinations, b) emphasis should be transferred to all writing skills development because insufficient writing skills have an influential role on the other reasons were found responsible for students' fear of writing composition, c) vocabulary enrichment should be a basic teachers' target as students emphasized their great difficulty in that domain, d) teachers must be careful when they evaluate students' compositions because feedback can cause a diversity of feelings, e) emphasis must be given on reading books as a vehicle to help students enrich their vocabulary and improve their skills, and f) teachers should educate both themselves and students on writing apprehension and its effects.
