Özet:
Monocyclic and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) contaminations has been on the increase in ponds, lakes and other environmental water resources in major industrial city like Houston, Texas. The higher demands and supply of petroleum products and its by-products has intensified the pressure on Oil and chemical companies to increase production and competitions, the higher the production, the higher the potential of the risks involved in industrial contamination of the environment and the surrounding water sources. The goals of this research project are to identify, characterize and measure the magnitudes of the MAH and PAH contaminants in the environmental water sources and reservoirs. The analysis of the MAH and PAH in these environmental mediums were performed using the gas chromatography with the mass spectrometer detector. The results from this research has shown that MAH and PAH contaminants are presents in the water samples collected for analysis; however, the quantities and types of the MAH and PAH contents differ for each region evaluated. The data presented also shows that the concentrations of the contaminants varies from for the two sampling sites and all the concentrations were mostly within acceptable range and in accordance with the available data from the Government agencies in charge of monitoring environment toxic compounds. This research was performed following the guidelines and practices of the government agencies such as United States Environmental protection Agency (EPA), Occupation and Safety Health Administration (OSHA), National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) and the National Institute of Occupational Safety Health (NIOSH).
The water samples collected from the Barker reservoir and Herman Park were evaluated and analyzed for PAH contaminant. The PAH contaminants that were the focus of this research are the same PAH contaminants highlighted by the USEPA as the major carcinogenic compounds polluting the environmental water sources all over the world. Surprisingly higher levels of PAH were found at the Herman park than is normally allowed in a recreational setting like Herman park. This could be an alarming fact because kids and adults are in constant contacts with the water and the kids are sometimes playing under the fountain located in some sections of the water source. This research also compares the factors and activities surrounding the sites that might be responsible for some of the high level of PAH and other contaminants found in the water sources. The results obtained provide important evidence and risks to the health and wellbeing of the humans and animals that uses these areas as a source of recreation and amusements.
