Özet:
Resorcinarene-based cavitands are widely explored in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Tetraquinoxaline-spanned cavitands are derivatives of resorcinarenes, which are comprised of four rigid aromatic walls that promote non-covalent interactions with other molecules or ions. These reversible interactions are a key feature of supramolecular studies, and a property of focus in host-guest chemistry, a sub-field within these studies.
The goal of this project is the synthesis of a resorcinarene-quinoxaline-substituted interdigitated capsule (Figure 1) 10, a designed host which can undergo a conformational change that can be temperature, solvent or pH driven. The activation of this mechanism will allow for the controlled capture and release of guest molecules or ions. ¹ H NMR, variable-temperature NMR and thin-layer chromatography was used to characterize the interdigitated capsule and study its conformational behavior.
It was observed under variable-temperature NMR that the partially-purified product of the synthesis of 10 experiences a small conformational rearrangement when exposed to temperatures ranging from 328 K to 223 K. The behavior of the signals was not indicative of its conformation moving from vase towards kite, but more of a twisting motion from the quinoxaline components. Cavitand 5 (model to 10) exemplified similar behavior from 323 K to 223 K. Additional TFA studies on 5 did indicate the cavitand's conformational rearrangement towards the kite position.
Understanding the capsule's physical properties allowed for the exploration of host-guest studies via variable temperature NMR. Further development of capsules will create a greater potential for applications in toxic remediation, targeted binding and detection methodologies.
