Özet:
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the actual stereotypes about homosexuality that are held by heterosexual males and compare those stereotypes to the stereotypes that homosexual males perceive heterosexual males hold true. The problem addressed by this study is a lack of research discussing discrepancies between the heterosexual male view of homosexuality and the perceived heterosexual male view of homosexuality from the homosexual male perspective. Grounded in Minority Stress Theory, this case study employed interview techniques in which heterosexual and homosexual men were interviewed about their perceptions regarding heterosexual men's stereotypes of homosexuality. The interviews were designed to question stereotypes that exist in the heterosexual community about homosexuality and homosexual men, how homosexual men and heterosexual men differ in perception of stereotypes of homosexuality and homosexual men, and how heterosexual stereotypes relate to perceived stress in homosexual men. Twelve homosexual participants were interviewed on their perception of the stereotypes heterosexual males hold true regarding homosexuality. This was followed by interviews with twelve heterosexual males commenting on the stereotypes generated from the homosexual participant interviews. The interviews included questioning heterosexual male views of the stereotypes reported by homosexual males. Homosexual males reported stereotypes of feminine behavior, feminine interests and sexual and romantic attraction in heterosexual males as the common stereotypes held true by heterosexual males. The heterosexual male interviewees disagreed with the common stereotypes reported by the homosexual male participants. Heterosexual males did report, however, that heterosexual males as a whole were likely to hold these stereotypes true. Other findings of this research project indicate that there is much more to learn regarding the role stereotyping play in the development of stress, and perceived stress, in homosexual males. The Minority Stress Theory stands as a theoretical foundation for the perceived stress in the homosexual community as it appears that perception of homosexuality in the hetero-normative environment has a negative effect. Future research can expand upon the theoretical ideology and perhaps have profound impacts on the perception of homosexuality in the hetero-normative environment.
