This dissertation analyzes the concept of social defense by focusing on the aesthetics and politics of monstrosity. Throughout, it is argued that mechanisms of social defense function in relation to the formation of aesthetic regimes. Biopolitical social defense, in particular, works as an assemblage construed through a model of vision that aims to understand its object as a bearer of a hidden interior space, which is populated by threats. What this internalization achieves is not simply the need to regulate these threats, but also the active production of an assemblage that is defined by its need to regulate these threats in the name of social defense.
Three models of monstrosity, i.e., prodigious monstrosity, sexualized monstrosity, and criminal monstrosity, are analyzed through the framework of power and visibility, and brought into dialogue with figures from the history of philosophy in order to elaborate the conceptual foundations of the mechanisms of social defense and configuration of aesthetic patterns operative. The chapters trace out the following themes, in succession: the relationship between sovereign authority and divine power, the affective production of sexuality, and the biopolitics of the penitentiary. The first chapter questions the relationship between sovereign authority and divine power in the cases of prodigious monstrosity, by analyzing the Monster of Ravenna (1412) alongside Jean Bodin's account of sovereignty, and Augustine's account of prodigious monstrosity. The second chapter analyzes the pamphlet production around Marie-Antoinette through a reading of Kant's conception of the loathsome, and Foucault's account of the emergence of sexuality. Bringing Kant and Foucault together shows that the emergence of sexuality as a technology of power comes with an affective comportment of loathing, which works through the disruption of the distinction between the object of art and the object of vision. The last chapter focuses on Henriette Cornier, as a monstrous criminal and prisoner, and analyzes Foucault's account of the penitentiary and the emergence of criminality as internalized monstrosity. Overall, between these three figures, we see a shift not only in the category of monstrosity, but also in the methods and techniques involved in identifying and demonstrating monstrosity, along with the technologies designed to deal with monstrosity. The carceral assemblage, as the contemporary and biopolitical mechanism of social defense, denotes the moment when social defense takes on monstrosity not as an external figure, but as a defining characteristic of the technologies of defense.
