Plato's Philebus explores a common Platonic concern: the competition between the lives of knowledge and pleasure. Extended studies of the dialogue, however, typically treat the ethical, epistemological and metaphysical themes in isolation. This study investigates how the epistemological method of collection and division and the metaphysics of the fourfold ontology explain the best human life.
The epistemological method invites analysing both the human sciences and true pleasures of the Philebus in relation to the human end. Sciences are ranked in order of purity---the highest granting knowledge of the Forms---and true pleasures are divided into the mixed and the pure, with the purest found in the perfection of human intelligence: erotic contemplation and action in view of the Forms.
The prominence of the Forms confirms the centrality of nature in Plato's ethics. False pleasures derive from erroneous satisfactions in activities that frustrate the fulfilment of our nature; true pleasures follow achievements in accord with that nature. These achievements are accomplished through the right relation of the erotic soul's acts of judgement, perception, memory and imagination. Intellect is at work in collection and division as well as in our self-determination as we shape our lives.
Human intelligence, in ordering our embodied lives, imitates the divine intellect ruling the cosmos. Both intellects are productive causes that impose the Forms on this world. Thus the metaphysical classes of the Philebus ---limit, cause, mixture and unlimited---explain both how the Forms are instantiated in particulars, and the divine exemplar who is the model for human intelligence.
Still, the perfect self-sufficiency of the divine intellect is impossible for humans. Thus we must have recourse to vigilant self-examination lest we fall into tragic self-delusion. Our best condition is godlikeness: an imperfect approximation of the divine life. But Plato's divine intellect raises questions: does it experience pleasure and what is its relationship to the Forms? It is argued that all erotic intellects can---and should---experience pleasure, but that the separation of Forms and divine intellect generates an unresolved weakness in the Philebus' metaphysics.
