Özet:
Simulation education for nurses, an educational modality replicating real world clinical situations, has benefits such as positive effects on student nurse perceptions of confidence, improved patient outcomes, and reduced healthcare costs. Traditional clinical simulation in nursing education involves care of one patient at a time; however, day-to-day nursing generally involves multiple patients. Research on multiple-patient simulation is limited, but shows promise in simulating typical daily situations and workflow for student nurses. Multiple-patient simulation has implications for areas in which new graduate nurses have struggled, including time management, delegation, and prioritization. Master’s Entry Programs in Nursing (MEPN) students differ from students in undergraduate associate and baccalaureate programs, and these differences are characterized by limited research.
The purpose of this qualitative cross-sectional descriptive pilot project was to explore MEPN students' experiences with a multiple-patient simulation scenario. Five students in a Northern California MEPN program participated in a multiple-patient simulation scenario and completed semi-structured follow-up interviews. Responses indicated that students felt that clinical experience best equipped them for learning how to care for multiple patients, but that a multiple-patient simulation would benefit students by allowing them to practice and train these skills, such as prioritization and delegation, before taking them to the bedside. Additionally, participants felt that their past professional, educational, and life experience equipped them with time management and service skills to better care for multiple patients. With increasing scarcity of training resources, such as time, clinical placements, and clinical faculty, multiple-patient simulation shows promise in improving nursing education by helping students successfully train using simulation skills.
