Özet:
This research aims to assess the local food environment and the resulted food-related travel behavior in a comparatively affluent urban area, Johnson County in Kansas. The current research of local food environment focused on the physical accessibility measures, and their effects on health in the urban areas with disparity. However, few studies have been conducted in the affluent neighborhoods where there are still residents suffering from limited access to healthy food resources. In addition to the attributes of physical food accessibilities, the planning factors including land use patterns and transportation facilities, and attributes of spatial configurations which may potentially shape the local food environments have seldom been explored based on the existing research. Moreover, most existing studies of the local food environments focus on the evaluation of physical environments, which fail to address the actual individual behaviors of food shopping.
Therefore, based on the data collected through a large scale (1250 respondents) survey on food shopping behavior, the conventional physical food accessibilities (density, proximity, and variety), and the expanded measures of food environments from planning factors (spatial accessibility, land use, and transportation) were used to link food environments to individual travel behaviors for food shopping (travel frequency, time, and mode). The results demonstrated that the conventional proximity to healthy food outlets were not the significant determinants for most of the food shopping travel behaviors. However, adding the other two measures of physical food accessibility, especially the variety of healthy food stores, could lead to a higher predictive power for the actual individual travel behaviors. It also confirmed that integrating more accessibility tools from urban planning theories to supplement the conventional food environment assessment can provide a more precise understanding of how built environments can affect actual individual behaviors for food shopping. The findings of this research would help frame or evaluate the potential effectiveness of transportation and urban planning policies that aim to promote healthy living.
