Özet:
Driving ability during emergency evacuation is significantly affected due to the chaotic nature of emergency evacuations. The vulnerable population which include aging adults may experience impaired sensory processing (vision and hearing), decreased cognitive capacity, reduced speed of processing, increased response times, and one or more chronic illnesses, all of which further limit their capability to adequately visualize the surrounding environment, process driving-related sounds, and perform the necessary maneuvers throughout the evacuation in a timely manner. However, to date researchers have focused on crashes on roadways generally, but have not focused on roadway, temporal and other driver-related characteristics which significantly affect crash frequency during emergency evacuation. The latter drawback may negatively affect the evacuation process especially in the areas with a high percentage of an aging population, cause delays, and increase crash occurrence. This work aims to fill the existing gap in the state-of-the-art and develop a set of statistical models that will allow estimating a wide range of driving ability performance indicators based on both roadway and driver-related characteristics which significantly affect the ability to drivers to safely evacuate. Age, Gender, Visual disorders, Minimum space headway among other driver and roadway characteristics was found to significantly affect the odds of having a crash during emergency evacuations.
