Özet:
This report documents a continuation of research investigation on the effectiveness of exterior beam rotation prevention systems for bridge deck construction as it relates to a change in bridge skews only, while all other parameters remain constant. (Ashiquzzaman et al., 2016) Field problems in steel girder bridges have been reported where the fascia girder experienced excessive rotation during construction, caused by the unbalanced overhang loading. The overhang brackets exert rotational loads on the fascia girder that designers usually address for the in-service strength and deflection but not due to construction loads. The impact of the use of the screed machine during construction, far exceed the torsional consideration of in-service use. The rail mechanism and the wheel loads acting on the overhang create large torsional loads on the fascia girder which can cause potential problems during construction and possibly, safety issues. A prior study, Report No. FHWA-ICT-16-015 performed by Saint Louis University provided recommendations to reduce the rotations associated with the exterior beams during bridge deck construction. (Ashiquzzaman et al., 2016) The objective of this study is to improve on the understanding of the behavior of the exterior beams during bridge construction and identify critical factors that might affect the girder behavior as the bridge skew varies from 0° to 60°. The research includes the use of a parametric finite element model analysis of an existing bridge, validated by the collected deformation readings from the bridge, at different stages of construction. Results from the parametric study were used to identify the behavior of the bridge exterior girders as construction loads are applied to the skew bridge. Model deformation readings were collected at 6 foot increments along both exterior girders for the different skews. The data was graphed and compared to normal skew bridge (0° skew) results for comparison and determination of change in rotation along the span of the exterior girders. Torsional rotations on the exterior I-Girders increased as the skew increased.
