Özet:
The beatification of John Henry Newman (1801-1890) by Pope Benedict XVI on 19 September 2010 at Cofton Park, Birmingham, rekindled in the English-speaking world the interest in Newman's life and thought, especially the volumes of soul-searching sermons he left as a legacy of his theological insight and ingenious preaching.
This dissertation has been written on ten of the extant sermons from a series of sixteen that, as an Anglican deacon, Newman preached on gospel parables at St. Clement's, Oxford, between 1 August and 21 November 1824. The study of these sermons is an effort to resound in the academic world the treasury of his fine thought and theological reflections, which inadvertently pose the debatable question on whether the faith and sanctity of the theologian are necessary for his studies.
The amount of studies dealing with the life and ideas of this prominent Anglican and later Catholic theologian is prodigious, and the stream of new books, biographies, and articles on him indicate the presence of solutions to many theological and social issues that can be found in the life and works of Newman.
The reading of published sermons is expected to increase in this age where various sources of communication can now circulate sermons across the globe even before the preacher has climbed down from the pulpit. Re-introducing Newman's sermons on gospel parables should find a good audience among the people of this present time as preaching them did in his own days, for his message remains relevant to date.
By analyzing some of Newman's sermons on the gospel parables, this dissertation recognizes his method as exemplary after the pattern of preaching by Christ. As Matthew records, "He spoke to them only in parables, to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world" (Mt 13:34-35).
This dissertation comprises three sections. The first is the biographical chapter on Newman, as knowledge on his person will also contribute to a greater understanding of his sermons. The second section is an analysis of ten of his sermons on the gospel parables, and the third is a demonstrative reflection with methodological illustrations on how to use stories and parables for teaching and preaching. This leads to a necessary distinction between a sermon and a homily, and the argument on why Newman's preaching is normally referred to as sermons rather than homilies.
The conclusion of this dissertation significantly serves as an introduction to the future work on Jesus as the parable or story of his Father, which should lead to a greater understanding of Christ and his saving mission on earth. The analysis of Nouvelle Liberte an African parable represented in sculpture form is the litmus test for this intended study of Jesus in the exploration of more African methods in the study of Systematic Theology.
