This study looked at the characteristics that long-term superintendents believe gave them ability to have longevity. The problem researched was what characteristics are necessary for a superintendent to possess that would increase their longevity in the same district. Districts that have a high turnover at the superintendent level are impacted as are the superintendents themselves. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the perspective a long-term superintendent has on what traits are important to achieve longevity. Dissatisfaction theory would indicate that once the community is unhappy with a superintendent the community then responds by getting on the school board to remove the superintendent. A qualitative approach was utilized in this study through the use of interviewing superintendents who had been a leader for their district for a minimum of five consecutive years. The interviewees answered eleven interview questions with the data then being collected and subsequently analyzed to look at traits commonly identified by these superintendents. Four research questions were asked. What qualities do superintendents who have successfully led a district for more than five years possess that have allowed them to have this longevity? How did these same successful superintendents develop these successful traits? How would these superintendents develop these successful qualities in their administrators? How do these long-term superintendents assess these qualities when they are hiring new administrators? All five superintendents identified as trust and relationship building as being the key traits to establishing longevity that these traits were developed through with experiences having developed these characteristics. All five also felt that they could identify them in others and were able to develop them by mentoring administrators. This data could be utilized to support new superintendents or guide programs developing them.
