Özet:
Semiconductor quantum dots have been studied extensively due to their unique absorption and emission properties. One particularly important topic of interest is their potential for eradicating cancer cells in photodynamic therapy,1 where using quantum dots with photosensitizers tethered to their outer shell can create singlet oxygen to kill cancerous cells. However, the interaction between the surface of these Cd quantum dots with singlet oxygen has received little attention, even though sulfur surface capping groups could potentially react with singlet oxygen. We have used small homogeneous model clusters to study the chemistry between Cd-SR moieties and singlet oxygen. These clusters include [Cd4(SPh)10] 2- originally prepared by Dance et. al.2 We have characterized these clusters via ESI-MS, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Cd NMR, and XPS. The cluster does react with singlet oxygen leading to a new precipitate material that contains numerous doubly oxidized sulfur groups. Formation of these sulfinato groups has been verified by FTIR and XPS experiments conducted at Penn State University. The Cd-SR clusters rapidly quench singlet oxygen with rate constants of about 6 x 108 M-1sec-1. Since the chemical reaction with singlet oxygen is quite slow, we believe that most of this quenching is by a physical mechanism.
