Nurses play a critical role in providing direct care to older adults for health promotion, health maintenance, health education, disease prevention, and end-of-life interventions. The shortage of nurses willing to work in geriatric care exacerbates the problem of meeting the demands and needs of the older adult population. The field of gerontology is not as appealing as many other areas of nursing specialization, which has produced an alarming disinterest among nursing students. The lack of interest stems from low social status, unattractive work environments, few positive practice experiences, and negative attitudes about caring for older adults. A quantitative, quasi-experimental approach was used to discover if an immersion experience with healthy older adults would influence baccalaureate freshman nursing students' attitude toward older adults. Freshman nursing students enrolled in an introductory nursing course, as part of their syllabus and coursework, were required to participate in one of a variety of immersion experiences with healthy older adults. Students' gerontological community experience occurred on one day for approximately three hours. A researcher-designed demographic questionnaire (RDDQ) described the attributes of the sample, which included age, gender, ethnicity, and information about any prior experience with older adults. A pretest/posttest single group design using Kogan's Attitude Toward Older People (KAOP) scale was used for data collection. The KAOP was analyzed through a paired t test to determine if there was a difference between the pretest/posttest scores. The paired t test found a significantly higher mean score (M) and standard deviation (SD) in the posttest (M = 149.539, SD = 18.863) as compared with the pretest (M = 138.410, SD = 18.216). The results indicated exposing nursing students to healthy older adults could be a potential academic framework to positively affect students' attitude on gerontological practice.
