Özet:
In this study, I examined Strong Black Woman (SBW) role characteristics as predictors of depression and ethnic/self-pride. Additionally, I investigated the extent which social isolation and resilience mediated these relationship as well as the moderating influence of gendered racialized stress. I used structural equation modeling (SEM) to investigate the direct and indirect effects of an obligation to display an image of strength, emotion suppression, and a resistance to vulnerability on depressive symptoms among 205 Black women. Within the same model, indirect and direct effects of an intense motivation to succeed and an obligation to help others on ethnic/self-pride on resilience were explored. Finally, in a second model, I included gendered racialized stress as a moderator. Contrary to hypotheses, there were no direct effects for an obligation to display an image of strength, emotion suppression, and resistance to vulnerability on depression. In addition, there were no direct or indirect effects of an intense motivation to succeed and an obligation to help others on ethnic/self-pride through resilience. However, there was a direct effect of an obligation to help others and depression and an indirect effect of emotion suppression and resistance to vulnerability on depressive symptoms through social isolation. Emotion suppression and resistance to vulnerability were inversely associated with resilience and indirectly associated with ethnic/self-pride. Finally, an obligation to display an image of strength was associated with resilience and indirectly associated with ethnic/self-pride. Results supported the complex nature of the SBW role. Findings highlighted specific SBW role characteristics that may be functional, adaptive, and associated with psychological distress.
