Özet:
This paper sets forth to help begin to fill in some of the gaps that exist for assessing suicide risk in children by helping answer the question of what evidence clinicians can use to assess risk of suicide in child-aged patients. By utilizing attachment theory, family systems theory with a focus on dysfunction, and the interpersonal theory of suicide, clinicians working with children can begin to understand the importance of screening all clients regardless of age for suicidal ideation and intent and have a means in which to do so. Childhood suicide is often mislabeled, misunderstood, and met with significant amounts of stigma. These theories, in combination, set forth to help describe how experiences during child development can influence suicide risk during childhood. The integration of theories suggests that how a child's family functions can provide evidence for clinicians to use to assess risk of suicide. A tool to assist with documentation of risk assessment is provided.
