Özet:
Downward classism theory was proposed as a way to explain class prejudice from higher toward lower social classes. In downward classism theory, four belief systems (meritocracy, belief in a just world, Protestant work ethic, and in particular, social dominance) work together to predict downward classism, which manifests as lowered welfare support, support for social class inequality, and increased desire for social distance from the poor. Downward classism theory fills a gap in the psychological prejudice literature, but it was previously untested. Two studies rectified this and provided strong support for downward classism theory. The first study utilized an upper class, American population and found that the four belief systems predicted downward classism as expected. Negative stereotypes and perceived responsibility of the poor played mediational and moderational roles, respectively, as well. The second study experimentally tested and validated these relationships in an undergraduate sample. Manipulated higher social status caused higher downward classism, mediated by social dominance orientation. Negative stereotypes mediated the relationship between social dominance and downward classism. Perceived responsibility of the lower class, in turn, moderated the relationship between negative stereotypes and downward classism, such that the relationship was stronger at lower levels of poor-responsibility. Several demographic differences in downward classism were found in both studies, including higher relative levels of prejudice for conservatives, Asians and Whites, and high subjective status groups. Implications and interventions were discussed, including how reducing classism should be a priority for those looking to improve support for social programs that provide services to people on welfare.
