Özet:
The purpose of the phenomenological qualitative study was to investigate how 1st and 2nd grade teachers' phonics instruction preparation and teaching experiences support students' ability to become proficient readers. Four research questions explored the perceptions of 1st and 2nd grade teachers' professional development benefits and challenges in the field of phonics instruction. The study was conducted by analyzing 10 participant interviews from two different elementary campuses. The findings suggest that many teachers received little to no training in the area of reading, specifically phonics instruction in their teaching preparation/certification courses. Participants appeared confident in their reading knowledge and teaching ability. However, the need for additional professional development was expressed. Although teachers are faced with many obstacles, they continue to strive toward implementing quality phonics instruction that intentionally meets the reading needs of each student.
