Özet:
The bees (Class Insecta, Hymenoptera: Anthophila) are main pollinators for most of the world's flowering ecosystems. In recent years, honeybee populations have declined, due in part to colony collapse disorder (CCD) as well as habitat destruction and impacts of invasive species. For many species of bumble bees (Genus Bombus) and honeybees (Genus Apis), pollen is a main source of protein for their diet and for the development of their queens. Although pollen has been found to have specific microbiotic bacterial associations with host flower species, little research has been done on the microbiome of pollen from bees in Illinois. The goal of this study was to discover potential associations between pollen microbiota, bee species, and habitat type. We hypothesized that the more abundant the bacterial and fungal species, then the more likely it is to affect the microbe diversity of each habitat and may affect the health of the bee community. Three habitats: restored prairie, urban, and sand prairies were used to sample bee species during the summer of 2017. 250 total bees were collected and Apis and Bombus were most abundant in each habitat. Corbiculate pollen was used to run total DNA extraction and Illumna sequencing was run at the USDA in Peoria, IL. Twenty-four indicator species were found between bacterial and fungal species with high abundances of closely related bacterial species to Pseudomonas sp. OTU1, Dechloromonas sp. and Erwinia sp. OTU1 and Epicoccum nigrum, Metschnikowia sp. and Zygosaccharomyces for fungal abundances. While bacteria and fungi found do not seem to have any deleterious effects on the bees, more replicates need to be done to fully represent the biota affecting bee health.
