Özet:
The use of addictive substances during pregnancy continues to rise despite the known deleterious effects of addictive substances on the developing fetus. Neonates exposed to addictive substances in-utero suffer from a variety of negative outcomes that result in the need for specialized care. To improve neonatal outcomes, current research promotes involvement of the mother, who used addictive substances during pregnancy, in her newborn's care. However, women who use addictive substances during pregnancy often feel judged and ridiculed by nurses who care for them, or their newborns, leading these women to be less involved in their newborn's care. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to examine the factors related to perinatal nurses' therapeutic attitudes towards women who use addictive substances during pregnancy. The sample consisted of 98 perinatal nurses from three hospitals. The study results indicate that perinatal nurses expressed moderately positive ( M = 92.98, SD = 10.04) therapeutic attitudes towards women who use addictive substances during pregnancy. The hierarchical multiple regression found three factors to be statistically significantly related to perinatal nurses' therapeutic attitudes. Knowledge of addictive substance use during pregnancy had the highest beta value (beta = .28, p = .01), followed by organizational support (beta = .21, p = .03), and professional experience in caring for patients with addiction disorders (beta = .21, p = .04). These study findings can be used by health care systems, and organizations that support perinatal nursing, to promote access to educational events aimed at improving perinatal nurses' knowledge of addictive substance use during pregnancy. Additionally, enhanced education must be combined with a supportive organizational environment that provides perinatal nurses with professional resources to best care for women who use addictive substances during pregnancy as well as newborns exposed to addictive substances in-utero.
