Özet:
Through the use of both explicit and implicit measures, this study investigated the relationships among self-compassion, and fragile and secure self-esteem. A sample of N = 190 college students, at a large ethnically and socio-economically diverse urban university, completed self-report measures of self-compassion (SC), self-esteem (SE), defensive reporting and distress. Participants also provided written descriptions of five early memories that were coded using the Early Memory Index (EMI) to measure implicit distress. Heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and heart rate variability (HRV) were also measured during a stressful mental math task. A systematic replication of Shedler, Mayman and Manis' (1993) illusion effect was upheld and provided a rationale for inclusion of implicit and explicit measures of mental health. Results indicated that following threat, higher self-compassion predicted lower state stress, but not neuroticism or physiological reactivity. Self-compassion had no effect on physiological recovery. Those with fragile self-esteem (higher SE and lower SC) evidenced higher defensiveness as indicated by higher observer rated distress, while those with secure self-esteem (higher SC and higher SE) had lower state stress and higher HRV. Self-compassion also displayed a significant positive correlation with defensiveness scales. Similar to self-compassion, higher defensiveness scores among those with higher self-esteem predicted higher HRV. Ethnic differences in self-compassion were also explored. This study suggests that in the context of higher self-esteem, self-compassion can provide self-soothing and decreased perception of distress. Self-compassion, however, is not exempt from self-report bias and may take on explicit and implicit forms. An argument is made for the use of explicit and implicit measures in self-compassion and self-esteem research.
