Özet:
Section 1; Introduction In this section there is a brief attempt to understand Jesus away from later Christological interpretations, which are later accretions to Jesus own self understanding. Jesus understood himself to he within the prophetic tradition of Israel, but further he understood herself to be the Messiah through whom the Kingdom of God would come. In this he interpreted his function as a Jew; ie, freed from any self understanding as the second Person of a Trinitarian God, The Church, the Sacraments, Christological theology, the Priesthood and Christendom belong not to Jesus, but to later Christian tradition and faith. Section 2; Critical Analysis of Literature. In this section the various 'streams of approach' to Pauline interpretation are investigated and estimated. The Jewish Approach, as seen in Klausner, Montefiore, must finally fail to understand Paul as it ca:\not accept what Paul accepted, that in Jesus the Messiah had come. The Eschatological Approach, as seen in Schweitzer, has much light to shed, but fails if this be considered the only way to interprete Paul. - 2 The relation of Paul to Jevish Thought is proven not only by the extreme position of Davies, but by the eminently sensible approach of Thackery and Ellis The 'liberal' approach, as seen in Wrede and Weiss is forced to stumble on the same rock of offence as the Jewish Approach, namely the interpretation of Jesus. Paul's contacts with the early Church have been interpreted in extreme ways, as Munck's portrayal of complete harmony between the two, to Bultmann's 'no correspondence between the two In a General Approach to Paul various insights towards understanding Paul by such distinguished authors as Dodd and Dibelius are picked up. The Hellenistic Interpretation of Paul is seen to have had many false claims made of it, but it is seen also in one very important aspect to have had an effect on Paul, namely, the use of the Hellenistic language, together with the emotional and intellectual overtones which language always carries with it. Section 3. Estimate of Paul. Drawing on the insights gained from the various schools of Pauline understanding, a portrayal of Paul is attempted. Paul was born into a Jewish household at Tarsus, which while it was probably an orthodox household, was part of the Diaspora. Paul had a good training in the faith of his nation, particularly the Old Testament, and became the rising young star of the Pharisaic party. He opposed the new growing Christian faith, seeing that it involved more than a code of ethics, but a way of regarding God. In the height of his persecuting activity! however, he was stopped violently by God. While various attempts have been given along psychological grounds to understand I aul's conversion, we must take it as it stends, as a call from God in prophetic tradition. As they had been called of the Lord, so now was Paul.
