Mandated reporting continues to be a primary method for preventing and decreasing the incidence of child abuse. Schools are the most frequent source of substantiated child abuse reports and, accordingly, teachers have been a focus of research on reporting behavior and knowledge. Supplemental school personnel (i.e. teaching assistants and teacher aides), however, have not been the focus of research on mandated reporter knowledge. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the knowledge of child abuse and maltreatment amongst New York State supplemental school personnel, including both teaching assistants and teacher aides.
Supplemental school personnel participants (n = 133) completed a researcher-developed background information survey and knowledge questionnaire. Participants then completed a modified version of the Crenshaw Abuse Reporting Survey (CARS-S; Crenshaw, 1994) to determine respondents' ability to identify scenarios of possible neglect or physical abuse. An overall knowledge score was calculated using a total correct and percent correct out of 14 questions. The knowledge of supplemental school personnel was compared to characteristics of the employed survey respondents (i.e., socioeconomic status, school age population) and individual characteristics of the teaching assistant or aide (i.e., level of education, years of experience, and additional training in the child abuse reporting mandate). Results indicated no significant relationships between supplemental school personnel knowledge and their level of education, years of experience, student population, socioeconomic status, or occupation. A statistically significant correlation was found between overall knowledge and hours of training. A statistically significant correlation was also found between overall knowledge and accuracy in identifying scenarios of neglect. However, there was no correlation between overall knowledge and accuracy in identifying scenarios of physical abuse. Limitations of the present study were discussed. Implications for this study highlighted the need for consistent training and support in regard to child abuse identification, reporting procedures, and reservations when reporting. Areas for future research were considered.
