Education-focused after-school programs focus on disadvantaged students, who by virtue of their race or a lack of social support are discouraged from pursuing higher education (Keith & Hollar, 2012). For this study, a quantitative and qualitative design was utilized to evaluate a San Francisco Bay Area education-focused after-school pipeline program (BAP). This evaluation explored whether the goals of increased social support and improved coping skills have been consistently met for youth over their time in the program. In addition, this evaluation looked to better understand whether psychosocial improvements reported by youth, or if the mediation variable of GPA best predicted type of post-secondary attainment (i.e. college or trade school). Archival data collected from approximately 136 youth was used for the quantitative analyses. Focus groups were conducted with approximately 14 program youth for the qualitative design. Quantitative results indicated non-significant changes in scores over time for perceived social support and coping skills. Quantitative analyses did not support the variables of perceived social support and coping skills predicting type of post-secondary education attainment. Findings also did not support the mediation role of GPA predicting type of post-secondary education attainment. Qualitative results reinforced the role of program support helping youth achieve their educational goals. Approximately six themes were discussed and analyzed from the focus groups. More research is needed to explore the numerous variables that could predict type of post-secondary education attainment for youth but were not a part of this evaluation.
