For several decades, public schools and educators throughout the United States have experienced a major shift in the format and delivery of special education. As students with disabilities have moved from separation to integration, researchers in the field of education developed the concept of "co-teaching." General educators and special educators began to share classrooms and deliver instruction to diverse students as a team; or this is what was expected of them. Although the co-teaching concept is, theoretically, a brilliant approach to education and has been shown by a multitude of research to be extremely effective in educating all students, it has proven to be difficult to implement. Teachers have various experiences with, and therefore opinions of, co-teaching. These perspectives are important to consider in terms of establishing factors that are conducive to successful implementation, as well as those that hinder. In this mixed methods study, the perspectives of 43 teachers were collected and analyzed to help develop suggestions for those who are co-teaching, as well as building administrators facilitating co-teaching relationships.
Based upon this mixed methods study, it became apparent that thorough and intentional training, appropriate amount of collaboration time, and administrative support/accountability are necessities to successful co-teaching relationships. Challenges within a typical co-teaching relationship include maintaining healthy communication, unifying two unique personalities and teaching styles, and other practical pieces of the relationship that could be avoided if the mentioned necessities (training, collaboration time, administrative support/accountability) are present.
