Özet:
The purpose of this mixed method dissertation study was to understand the extent to which self-reflection with video (without and with feedback) changes the instructional behavior and reflective abilities of novice special education teacher candidates. The study included three novice teacher candidate participants working with students receiving special education services in a large suburban public school district. A combined single- subject design with multiple baselines across participants and changing conditions (ABC) was used with qualitative analysis to inform the research questions. Quantitative data, collected and graphed by participant across phases, were analyzed visually to determine if there was a functional relation between self-reflection with video (without and with feedback) and an increase in the target instructional behavior (e.g., rate of teacher- provided specific feedback statements). To determine findings for change in reflective abilities, the collective data sources used to measure reflective ability (i.e., Groningen Reflection Ability Scale, written self-reflection responses, reflective discussion responses, interview responses) were analyzed qualitatively to create a synthesis across participants. The findings suggest that there was strong evidence of a functional relation for self-reflection with video and feedback and an increase in the rate of teacher-provided specific feedback statements. Furthermore, participants reported an improvement in their abilities to reflect in- and on-action as a result of participating in the study. Subsequently, social validity interviews were conducted to determine participants' perceptions of the usefulness and effectiveness of the study procedures. Additional findings were discussed in relation to reflective growth in participants, study limitations, implications, and recommendations for future research.
