Özet:
This study evaluates the financial giving of alumni and supporters of Western Illinois University (WIU), a midwestern public university, covering a period from 2013-2017. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of donors and non-donors and develop a model to predict future alumni supports and gifts. College officials may benefit from this study by targeting those groups with higher giving potentials.
The result of logistic regression model indicates that a combination of key determinants of donor are residence in WIU zip code, degree received, college of affiliation, having relatives who have attended WIU, participation in sports and other activities during college, race, gender, marriage, divorce, veteran status, employee, scholarship received, number of degree, number of children, age, mobile and phone information, business and personal email information, contacts made by university officials and number of alumni events attended significantly affect the individuals' decision of donating. Results indicate differences in philanthropic behaviors by alumni and university supporters.
Our study suggests that university officials may benefit from rating donors based on the factors in our model and extensively publicize alumni activities and target those who volunteered during their college years. Alumni and supporters who are married or divorced have a higher probability of donating than the single ones. Alumni who have reside in the WIU zip code 61455 have a higher probability of donating than those outside of 61455 zip code. Those who have received some forms of scholarship during their college years have a higher probability of donating. Those who have involved in sports or other college activities have higher odds of donating than those who were not. University employees are more likely to donate. Alumni and supporters who have family legacy associated with the university are more likely to donate. Males are more generous. As the number of degrees for the alumni increases so does their probability of donating. Those with a graduate degree have better chances of donating than others. Alumni who have association with college of business have greater probability of donating than other. Availability of email and phone number information of alumni and supporters increases the odds of donating. Alumni and supporters who children have a higher odd of donating. Odds of donating increases as the age increases.
